Austin – Central

This region includes Downtown, The University of Texas at Austin, and residential neighborhoods including Clarksville, Tarrytown, Herman Brown, Bryker Woods, Pemberton, Old Enfield, Balcones Park, and Rosedale. Housing includes bungalows, historic mansions, homes undergoing renovation and redevelopment. Proximity to downtown and the University of Texas make Central Austin very appealing.

Downtown residential living opportunities include lofts, condominiums, and apartments. Within this area are the 2nd Street District, City Hall, the State Capitol Complex, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and the Sixth and Lamar retail intersection anchored by the flagship Whole Foods Market.

The University of Texas at Austin (UT) provides educational, cultural, and sporting opportunities to its students and Central Texas. Austin City Limits, a nationally televised PBS music program, is produced at the UT Communication Complex. The Blanton Museum of Art with the largest collection of any university art museum is also located on campus. West Campus is experiencing tremendous redevelopment. Guadalupe Street, better known as “the Drag,” borders campus to the west and is lined with restaurants, book stores, and student-oriented shops.

Hyde Park, located just north of UT was one of Austin’s first suburban areas and boasted the first trolley cars. It is now a historic district with a mix of Victorian homes, student condos and bungalows.St. Davids Hospital, the Concordia University redevelopment site, Seton Medical Center , and Central Market are just minutes away.

Along the shores of Town Lake and Lake Austin are terrific restaurants, hotels, and marinas. The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) regulates the dams which created these lakes. The City of Austin Parks and Recreation (PARD) manages the parks and municipal golf courses in the Austin area, including Deep Eddy Pool, Lion’s Municipal Golf Course, Mt. Bonnell, Hancock Recreation Center, and more.

This area was recently listed in planning.org as one of The Great Places in America.

Austin Independent School District (AISD) public schools include:
Elementary schools: Casis, Lee, Bryker Woods, Matthews, and Highland Park.
Middle schools: O’Henry, Lamar, and Kealing. Kealing is a magnet for math and science.
High schools: McCallum and Austin. McCallum is home to the Fine Arts Academy.
